Holy sites for Christians in Israel
Since christianity saw its beginnings in Israel, it is no wonder that there are so many christian
sites to visit in the holy land. Mary lived in Nazareth and died in Jerusalem. Jesus was born
in Bethlehem, did most of his teachings and miracles in the Galilee and spent the end of his
days in Jerusalem. In this post I will list some of the main christian sites to visit during your
stay in Israel.

Jerusalem area
Via Dolorosa, follow the stations of “the Way ofSorrow” in order to relive the last day of Jesus’s life starting from his condamnation until his crucifixion and burial.
Holy Sepulchre, the holiest christian site where Jesus was crucified, buried and rose back to life.
Mount of Olives, filled with churches recounting some of the most important stories in the bible such as the instance where Jesus stood and wept the destruction of the temple.
Mt Zion, where you can find David’s tomb, the Cenacle room or the church of the Dormition.
Emmaüs, located outside Jerusalem, it is where Jesus appeared post-resurrection for the
first time.
Qasr al-yahud, the castle of the jews located on the Jordan river is the site of baptism of
Jesus.
Jericho, and the mount of temptation monastery.
St George Monastery, carved in the Judean desert stones, is a beautiful sight even from
afar. The first monks isolated themselves here already in the 5th century.

Bethlehem
Church of the nativity, the place of birth of Jesus, one of the most important churches to
visit.

Shepherd’s Field, where the angels told the shepherds about the birth of Jesus
Sea of Galilee
Capernaum, Jesus’ “own city” where he taught and performed many miracles. A beautiful
church was built above St Peter’s house.
Mt Béatitudes, established on a mountain offers a great view of the sea of Galilee.
Bethsaida, most known for being the place where Jesus healed the blind man.
Yardenit, a baptisal site visited by thousands of pilgrims every year.
Tabha, a byzantine renovated church retelling the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000 people.
Next to it is the place of apparition of Jesus after his resurrection .
Nazareth area
Mt Tabor, the site of the transfiguration of Jesus perpetuated by a catholic church and designed by Antoni Barluzzi. With an altitude of 575m, the view above the plains of Israel is just unique.
Church of Annunciation, One of the biggest and most important churches. It is built above Mary’s house where the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary to announce the birth of jesus.

St Joseph’s Church, right across the church of annunciation is believed to be the house of Joseph.
